Most incident response still begins with a phone call. A driver stops, finds their handset, describes a location they may not know precisely, and waits to be transferred. By the time a control room has a confirmed position, the secondary risk — the queue forming behind a blocked lane — is already building.
Detection without a reporter
Automatic Incident Detection removes the reporter from the loop. In the ATS-ISER-S016 configuration, AI algorithms process data from the T48 Smart Micro sensor in real time, identifying accidents, road obstructions and abnormal traffic patterns as they occur rather than as they are described.
The position is exact because it is the sensor's own position. The classification is immediate because it is derived from the traffic behaviour itself — a sudden speed collapse across lanes reads very differently from a gradual congestion build.
Why false positives decide adoption
Any detection system that cries wolf gets ignored, and an ignored alert is worse than no alert. This is why adaptive learning matters more than raw sensitivity: the system refines its detection against historical data, improving accuracy and steadily reducing false positives over the life of the installation.
A control room's trust in an alert is an asset. It takes months to build and one bad week to lose.
The integration question
Detection only pays for itself when something happens as a result. Integration with existing traffic control systems enables automated responses — adjusting signal timings, triggering variable message signs upstream, dispatching the nearest unit — without a human first having to notice a line on a screen.
That is the real argument for AID. Not better cameras. Shorter time between the event and the response.
