Ask why a speed camera sits where it sits and the honest answer is often power. Trenching, ducting and a utility connection can dominate the cost of an enforcement installation, and the sites that are cheapest to connect are rarely the sites where the collisions happen.
Removing the connection
Solar ISER is the first smart speed radar powered by solar energy, eliminating the need for external electrical connections. That is not primarily an environmental claim, though it is that too. It is a siting claim: remote and off-grid locations become viable, and installation cost falls with the civil works rather than the hardware.
Capability does not drop
The trade normally expected — go off-grid, accept less system — does not apply here. Doppler radar detects vehicle speed across up to twelve lanes. Smart ANPR scans and identifies every vehicle passing the radar, capturing plate number, classification, type, make, model and colour. Embedded strobe lights deliver warnings visible from more than 200 metres.
Designing for the cloudy week
The engineering question in any solar deployment is not the sunny day. It is the seventh consecutive cloudy one. Alliance's solar warning systems are specified with battery storage sufficient for continuous 24/7 operation with backup power through seven cloudy days — the reserve that turns a solar installation from a demonstration into infrastructure.
Maintenance follows the same logic: no fuel, no electricity account, and upkeep that amounts largely to periodic panel cleaning.
