A highway is a controlled environment: same direction, similar speeds, predictable behaviour. A pedestrian crossing is the opposite — two classes of road user with a hundredfold difference in mass, meeting at right angles, each relying on the other to have noticed them.
Seeing the person, not the object
PEDISAFE uses advanced sensors and computer vision to detect pedestrians at crosswalks, and critically, to distinguish them from vehicles. That classification is what allows the system to act differently for a child stepping off a kerb than for a car waiting to turn.
Warning both sides
Safety alerting at a crossing has to be bidirectional. Audible and visual mechanisms give crossing notifications to pedestrians and yield alerts to drivers, raising situational awareness on both sides of the kerb rather than assuming one party will compensate for the other.
Enforcement as the backstop
Warnings change behaviour for the drivers who were going to comply anyway. For the rest, the system detects and captures violations at the crossing, documenting failure to yield with licence plate data and video evidence.
Alongside that, continuous monitoring of vehicle speed, volume and behavioural patterns turns each crossing into a data point — which crossings are actually dangerous, rather than which ones generate complaints.
